  2. The 8th grade class at Luis Munoz Marin Middle School in Newark, New Jersey has chosen the Conservation Crisis, specifically the Oil Spill in the Gulf as our topic for the Interdisciplinary project. As we study this topic we hope to find out the answers to the following questions:
    - Why is conservation necessary for the survival of the planet?
    - Why are we dependent on fossil fuels?
    - What are the long term effects of an oil spill?
Our students will be posting comments on this blog to document their process of discovering the answers to these questions.
In addition to this blog these are some of the final products we are looking to achieve:
    • A Timeline of events of the oil spill in the Gulf
    • Political cartoons based on the oil spill and conservation
    • A Persuasive Writing piece – persuading our government to outlaw harmful sources of energy and offer alternative sources of energy
    • A Public Service Announcement
    • An Annotated diorama or poster
    • Comparison charts
    • Coordinate Graphs with a Mathematical Model
    • Calculate the surface area of the oil spill based on an aerial map
    • Comparative analysis based on tables and graphs

  5. We researched and read articles about the oil spill in order to build our prior knowledge. Here is what some of our students have to say: The oil spill has caused a tremendous effect on many people. I have recently read an article on the oil spill and it made me think about all the damage and how many people have been affected by this oil spill. ~Brittany V.~

  6. I have heard about the oil spill in the gulf and in my opinion I think it’s outrageous what the company BP has done. In my school some of us, the 8th graders, are working on an oil spill project. I have recently learned more about the oil spill in the Gulf in an article. I personally think that many citizens in the gulf must be upset for what has happened. In an article, it states “when the spilled first happened, the people of the gulf coast did not wait for BP or the government to take action.” From this text I think anyone can assume that many people in the gulf cared about what has happen. Furthermore, I not only think that the oil spill is a tragic disaster but it is also an eye opener, I think this has shown us how we depend on our natural recourses. Like the loss of fish and how many people depend on the Gulf to have work. This Oil Spill has cause many organizations to join in and help.

  7. We worked in groups to create a timeline in order to explain about the oil spill and what caused the spill. We started from when it was still far too early to determine what caused the BP oil spill aboard the deepwater horizon. We continued to when out of no where a big explosion happened and took place in the middle of Gulf of Mexico. The cause of the spill was an issue of a giant energy explosion and its oil rig spreading everywhere. The actual date was May 7th. The man that knew what happen about the spill was Halliburton. Halliburton says, “Three years ago the US minerals management service raised concerns regarding oil rig blow outs and the cement had broke.” Cementing problems were associated with 18 of 39 blowouts between 1992 and 2006, and 18 of 70 from 1971 to 1991. There were 17 blow outs in the earlier period where contributing factors. This is my summary about the oil spill. We should learn from our mistakes and prevent something like this from happening again.

  8. Yesterday, I print out some paper that actually attracted my attention. This paper, talked about the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. I was amazed that this oil spill caused many damages to ocean life. This paper was an attention grabber regarding the oil spill. This oil spill was the biggest oil spill in the history of the United States. Millions and millions of dollars were wasted while trying to stop the oil spill to prevent it from spreading even more. About 210,000 gallons of oil were being spilled per day into the ocean. Several explosions occurred and this caused even more oil to spread. The first explosion wasn’t bad. However, the second explosion was estimated to through about 240,000 barrels of oil each day into the ocean. Thousands of ideas were given by many companies in order to know the different kinds of ways the oil spill could be stopped. Many sea animals were killed, among them were sea turtles. Many dead sea turtles continue to appear among the shores affected by the oil. The oil spill caused disastrous environmental impact.

  9. Two weeks ago my group and I were making a timeline. The timeline was about the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. It told everything that had happened throughout time. What I liked the most about the timeline is that it informed me what was going on. For me it was kind of cool because I had known at what time things started to happen and when it ended. This was something that it was fun to do, well at least for me. It was fun because when it was time to look for the pictures it showed what was going on and it gave me a better idea of how the situation was. It looked like that situation was getting under control and everything was getting better.

  10. Some of my colleagues and I were working on a time line about the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. We added different pictures to portray the different types of events that happened during this tragedy. We also added some colors to our time line to make it look presentable. Various types of websites were given to my group for us to be able to search for more information to add to our timeline. This oil spill was a major disaster. Our group searched for many important events that occur during this catastrophe. Something that was impressive was that this oil spill was the biggest oil spill in the United States history. The timeline was very easy to understand because it explained everything that happened in chronological order. Before starting our timelines we got the chance to read some information about the oil spill and write a summary about it. This was what helped us even more while working on our timelines.

  11. Recently the 8th grade classes have been working on a project about the oil spill. One of the recent activities was to make a timeline showing the events based on time which states what happened about the oil spill. I have made one with my fellow classmates and it shows the events that happened during the oil spill. I found this project an educational one, but fun to make and personalize. While working on the timeline we made I realized how much damage the Gulf has and how many people are trying to fix it. I also learned how many other are getting involved with the situation.

  12. What I learn about the time line activity my class completed was that many animals have gone through a lot of changes as a result of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. For example, many animals lost their habitats. With the oil spill still not under control at the time, oil was continuing to affect areas such as the marshes and wetlands areas; suffocating dolphins, turtles and a variety of birds, including the brown pelicans, the Louisiana state bird. BP's inability to control the spill and clean up the oil was a constant frustration to the community of the Gulf area as well as BP themselves. Minor oil spills are relatively common on the Gulf Coast, but this one had biologists stunned. I also learned that BP offered some compensation payouts in return for them waiving the right to sue. The BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill was the worst accidental spill ever; preparations were being finalised to seal the ruptured well. I enjoyed this activity because I learned alot more details regarding the tragic oil Spill in the Gulf.

  13. I recently read an article regarding Obama’s decision regarding not to open more Gulf waters to offshore drilling. What I learned about Obama backtracks on plan to open more Gulf waters to offshore drilling is that the decision, could have a “force on instant energy freedom while also laying a more permanent organization for the development of another energy sources.” Eastern areas of the Gulf, 125 to 300 miles off Florida’s west coast have been off limits to drilling since the House of Representatives passed a freeze in 2006. But a few weeks before the Deepwater Horizon exploded on April 20th, the Obama supervision promise to begin studying whether the eastern Gulf and parts of the Atlantic coast should be opened to drilling. Assembly would eventually have to approve such a plan. ~Jonathan R. ~

  14. Yesterday, I looked at an article and it told about the things that have been going on regarding the devastating Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico. It said that a group of business and government leaders were affected from the disastrous spill. They tried getting the government to buy more seafood instead of importing fish that could help battle consumer concerns. This has been a big challenge because there’s more that they need to clean up. It also told that the Gulf Coast states are set to receive a 37.5 % of money in their cost that is suppose to begin in 2017. The people that are going to do this work want the money sooner than 2017 so that the Gulf would be clean. For me this is something important because I know what’s going on and it makes me feel that that the President does care and that they are going to have to clean it sooner than 2017. This has been a big deal because there’s a lot of people without jobs and a lot of fish in extinction.

  15. What I learned about the oil spill is that the cause of it was an explosion. The cause of the explosion was the drilling that the Oil company BP was conducting when they had to decide whether or not to keep on working or not. It was April 20, 2010 when the explosion had happened. It sent millions of barrels filled with oil into the Gulf of Mexico. It killed eleven workers and injured thousands of people that were there during the explosion. I think this is the fault of BP because they decided to keep on working knowing something was wrong during the drilling. Now the company has to pay 1.5 million dollars everyday to pay for the damages and all the oil that spilled into Gulf Mexico. This is very awful because the oil has gone into the ocean and has killed lots of dolphins and other sea animals as well. All this happened because of a horrible, uncalculated decision BP made in Gulf Mexico.

  16. April 20, 2010… that’s the day that the oil spill struck the Gulf of Mexico. It has been said that this oil spill was so complex that they might not know what caused it for years. The BP gasoline company lost over 2.5 million gallons of oil which was wasted. This oil spill had many negative effects on not only people but wild life too. Due to the oil spill over 7,000 animals died including birds and many killer whales and even more fish had died all because of BP’s fault. Thankfully, that didn’t even put a dent in the oceans wildlife. As a result of BP’s gasoline company’s irresponsibility they had to pay a total of $11.6 billion dollars in recovery fees and clean up fees. Also a recent study in Louisiana shows that over eight thousand people lost their job due to this oil spill.

  17. What I learned from the article I read is that the gulf coast offshore drilling companies were hoping for a stronger partnership with Obama administration to make drilling safer. Some of the contributing factors that caused the BP oil spill were the fact that they did write their own rules, assessed with their own risks, and proceed with little oversight. I also read that President Obama’s proposal to expand deep-water drilling for just a month before the deep-water Horizon explosion was in large part of a political concession to gain Republican support for climate-change legislation. ~ Lisbeht S. ~

  18. I read an article about the Oil Spill in the Gulf and learned the following information. Oil spills from oil tankers operating at sea world-wide account for only 7.7% of oil in the ocean, yet large spills attract far more attention than other much larger sources of oil pollution. The International Tanker Owners Pollution Federation has information on all spills, large and small. Big Oil has been seen as a corporate bad boy ever since the U.S. Supreme Court broke up John D. Rockefeller’s Standard oil in 1911, but its reputation world hit a new low 99 years later. An estimated spill rate of between 53,000 and 62,000 barrels per day, nearly. Five million barrels of crude oil escaped into the Gulf.

  19. On April 20th 2010 an oil spill happened in Mexico and it affected a lot of people. Not only that but it affected animals to. Edward J. Markey discussed the challenges of climate change and our dependence for our oil. The Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico was one of the biggest in United States. Hundreds of barrels of oil were spilled into the ocean per day .Wild life was extremely affected by this oil spill. Many ocean animals died in effect of this oil spill, such as sea turtles. The oil spill cause disastrous environmental impact, however the spill continues to cause extensive damage to marine and wildfire habitats as well as the Gulf's fishing and tourism industries. Therefore scientists have reported immense underwater problems. It was estimated that over 53,000 barrels per day were escaping from the well. The U.S Government has named BP as the responsible party and committed to holding the company accountable for all cleanup costs and other damage. ~ Jasmine W.~

  20. What we did for the interdisciplinary project was create a time line of events leading up to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. We had to follow the directions. We went to the computer and got pictures and information. The pictures were about animals and the oil spill. The information we gathered as a group, we translated into our own words. It took the group quite some time because it was a lot of information. Soon we finished a couple of days past and we took pictures of our final timeline.
What I learned from the oil spill was that it was the largest marine oil spill in history. Also, the explosion killed 11 men and injured 17 others. The spill caused a lot of damage to the marine and wildlife habitat.

  21. While working in a group on our time line, we gained a lot of knowledge about the oil spill and how it happened in the Gulf of Mexico. In my group we went on the internet and researched for information about the oil spill. We also looked for pictures about the oil spill that corresponded with the information we gathered. We pasted our information down in chronological order and added a hint of color to make our time line look presentable.

  22. The first thing that my group did was look up some details on the computer about the oil spill. Also, we looked up some oil spill pictures about the animals in danger from the oil spill. From creating my timeline I learned that the sea water animals were in great danger because of the continuing oil spill that was happening in the Gulf of Mexico. From this oil spill disaster, a lot of fishermen were not able to continue their work on the shrimp boats because of the massive cleanup that was being conducted. That’s what I learned in my group and I had so much fun and I really enjoyed working with my group. ~Mary K.~

  23. Our teachers had us get together in a group and create a time line about the oil spill that occurred in the Gulf of Mexico. The people in my group were Lisbeth, Jonathan, Khalif, and Reinaldo. We learned about many things. For example “On May 7, 2010, BP engineer used undersea robots to move the containment chamber over the large of two remaining leaks.” Not only that but also representatives of the three oil companies involved in the deepwater drilling blame each other for the accident. However the process known as “top kill” tails to overcome the flow of oil and BP captured about 10,000 barrels of oil a day from Gulf of Mexico. All in all we researched finding pictures also to prove the facts about the oil spill and how this oil spill killed many sea creatures. This is what our group learned at the oil spill and how it affected many people. ~Jasmine W. ~

  25. After researching the Oil Spill in the Gulf, my group had to come up with a time line. The time line is organized by the dates and events in which it happened. We organized it by the dates of each event. We each had jobs. I was the supervisor of my group making sure my group members were doing the right thing. What I learned was how the oil spill began and how they are trying to take the oil out the ocean. The oil has killed lots of sea animals and is contaminating our water. Also I learned what the cause of this catastrophe was. The oil spill happened because of an explosion that happened during the digging. The workers had a decision to make,” To keep on digging? Or to stop?” They kept on digging and that’s when the explosion occurred. It sent thousands of barrels into the Gulf and it spread into the ocean. We had to find pictures that had matched with each date and event that we put on our time line. This is what I learned during doing the time line and working with my group. ~Jonathan A. ~

  27. What I learned is that the an oil spill is a release of a liquid petroleum hydrocarbon into the environment due to human activity, and is a form of pollution. The term often refers to marine oil spills, where oil is released into the ocean or coastal waters. The pollution in the water is getting worse everyday and as a result many fish are dying. The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico continued to cause extensive damage to marine and wildlife habitats as well as the Gulf's fishing and tourism industries. In late November 2010, 4,200 square miles (11,000 km2) of the Gulf were re-closed to shrimping after tar balls were found in shrimpers' nets. The total amount of Louisiana shoreline impacted by oil grew from 287 in July to 320 miles (510 km) in late November. In January 2011, eight months after the explosion, an oil spill commissioner reported that tar balls continue to wash up, oil sheen trails are seen in the wake of fishing boats, wetlands marsh grass remains fouled and dying, and that crude oil lies offshore in deep water and in fine silts and sands onshore. This is what I learned. ~Jonathan N.~

  28. The people in my group during the time line project were Anahi, Diana, Raheem, and Jonathan N. Our topic was on what was done to clean up the oil spill and who was there to help. I learned what role the Obama Administration played in the clean up. The Administration was noted to be incompetent in informing the public of how much the oil had been gushing from the blown out BP, which left the public clueless on how the clean up was going. Faith was lost in the government after they underestimated how much oil was still left in the ocean after the spill. No one really believed that the Obama Administration would be able to clean the oil spill correctly. These are some of the issues that my group learned while completing the timeline activity. ~Imirah B.~

  29. Yesterday I read an article about the aftermath of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. I learned about the role that the Obama administration played in the oil spill. The Obama administrations that were involved in the clean up stopped all new drilling. They claimed it was a “safety precaution”. Environmentalists claimed that if they would’ve kept drilling, 75% of wildlife would have been terminated. I myself feel this could’ve all been avoided if we used different energy sources, instead of using oil which is already one huge problem in America. Other natural sources should be used so resources that humans utilize can be helpful to them without hurting wildlife or themselves. ~imirah B.~

  30. While my class and I were in science, our science teacher was teaching us about Fossil Fuels. We were working with different types of materials. We used a test tube to prove whether a chemical reaction happens to the different types of substances we were testing. Three types of fossil fuels are coal, petroleum and natural gas. We were using test tubes and burning different types of substances. The teacher told us that if we put the test tube on top of the fire, the tube will get black. This black substance is called coal. However, if you put the test tube next to the fire this will prevent the test tube from getting black. We were observing the reactions of the substances when we heated it. Some substances remained the same, but other substances melted or changed colors. All the students in my class were given a sheet of paper to write their observations down. I like working on these types of projects because at the end you will always learn something new. For example, I learned about the three different types of fossil fuels.

For example, first it happened then thousands of people got layed off their jobs, not only that the oil spill took a hefty toll on wildlife. Many killer whales died as well as birds. I think I speak for not only myself but for my whole group when I say that we really enjoyed working together on this timeline activity. ~Reinaldo P. ~

  32. Yesterday my teacher told us to read an article and in that article I learned that a group of people wanted the government to begin purchasing sea food from the Gulf. They want them to help with the economy and they want to give the sea food to the prisons and to the Army. I think that this will be a good idea but at the same time I think that giving the sea food to the prisons and to the army without them knowing if the oil is still contaminated would not be smart on their part. ~ Luis R. ~

  33. In our science class our teacher was using a kerosene burner; the burner was producing a dark smoke called carbon dioxide. When we utilize too much of fossil fuels for energy instead of helping the environment it is polluting our environment. We also had a chance to use the burners; we had to use them for an experiment with other substances. There were some substances that changed its appearance when held over the flame.
Our teachers explain to us that the earth doesn’t need much carbon because it will be making a large amount of damage to the earth’s ozone layer that protects our planet. ~Luis R. ~

  34. This is what I and my group members learned. We learned about the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. My team members replied that we should search about the oil spill because we have people and nature that can be in major danger. For example, as soon as the oil hit the water it destroyed many of the sea animals and also slowed down the shrimp and boating businesses in the Gulf. The oil spill was located from the rig but they were drilling and resulted in a busted pipe. Many people who are in the Gulf were affected by this disastrous oil spill. We learned that BP was held responsible to clean up the spill. We enjoyed this activity because each of us worked on a part to complete it. ~ Khalif B. ~

  35. Our group was asked to research on the internet and find information about the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Then we went on Google and found some pictures of what happened at the oil spill. After that we started to write about what happened in chronological order. Finally, we pasted the pictures that we got on the timeline and colored the words. It took us some time to finish but when we were done it came out nice.
What I learned about the oil spill is that a lot of animals were injured in the oil spill. Also that a lot of the beaches were closed and no one was aloud to go. The Gulf was full of oil and a bunch of fish were dying and fishermen couldn’t do there jobs and support there families, this is what I learned researching the events of the oil spill in the Gulf. ~Joshua J. ~
